Glass and Glazing Specialty Contractor
Licensure Category

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What type of work comes under the scope of this license?
A: . A glass and glazing contractor is a specialty contractor whose scope of work is limited to the
installation and attachment of all types of windows and glass, whether fixed or movable; the
installation of swinging or sliding glass doors to existing walls, floors, columns or other structural
members of the building; the installation of glass holding or supporting mullions or horizontal bars
which are attached to existing building walls, floors, columns or other structural members of the
building, and the cutting and installation of glass and mirrors. A glass and glazing specialty
contractor may also install prefabricated glass, metal or plastic curtain walls or panels, caulking
incidental to such work and assembly, and installation of shower and tub enclosures and metal
fascias. (See Rule 61G4-15.018, Florida Administrative Code)
Q: Do I need a license to install/replace windows?
A: Yes, the Construction Industry Licensing Board determined window installation and
replacement requires either a general, building or residential contractor license or a local license,
which includes window installation and replacement in it’s scope of work. Now in addition to those
licenses a certified glass and glazing contractor may also install/replace windows.
Q: Is this license required to do glass and glazing work in Florida?
A: No, this is a voluntary category and does not create a requirement for licensure.
Q: Why would I want to get this license?
A: This license will allow a contractor to work anywhere in the state without
Having to get multiple local licenses to work in various cities and counties.
Q: Can I register my county glass and glazing license?
A: No, this licensure category only allows for the certification of glass and glazing contractors.
Q: Can I grandfather my county glass and glazing license?
A: No, the grandfathering provision does not cover this category of license.
Q: If I obtain this license can the cities and counties still require me to have their specialty
licenses?
A: No, the cities and counties cannot require a certified contractor to obtain local licenses to do
work covered within the scope of his/her certified license.
*NOTE: Occupational licenses may still be required by the local jurisdictions.
Q: When will I be able to take the exam?
A: The exams for this category and the other specialty categories are offered in October,
February and June.
Q: What is the net worth requirement for licensure in this category?
A: $10,000 net worth in the business name, $5,000 cash.
Q: What are the Insurance requirements for this licensure category?
A: $100,000 Liability Insurance and $25,000 property damage insurance.

How to Pick the Right Contractor

Shopping for an Honest Contractor Can Be a Challenge

Some things to look for -

• Always get at least 3 bids. But, remember the lowest bid is not always the best. Make sure each contractor is bidding what you asked for.

• Make sure they are licensed contractors. www.myflorida.com

More About Selecting an Honest Contractor

• Ask for references

• A contractor should never ask you to obtain a permit.

• If the job is over $2500.00 a notice of commencement must be filed. The contractor should take care of this for you.

• Get everything in writing, and make sure all changes are in writing also.

• Ask for certificate of insurance.

• Never give a large deposit.

• Wait for inspection to give final payment

• Be leary of the contractor that must have an answer right away or who will discount if you sign contract that day.

• If you find a contractor you are comfortable with but the price isn’t right, let them know. A good contractor will work with you and try to come up with different options to fit your budget and needs.
